Paradise

by

A new poem by Rye O'Brien that begins, "When I see you in my dreams your pupils are just as big / As when we are awake looking at / Each other ..."

When I see you in my dreams your pupils are just as big

As when we are awake looking at

Each other with quiet certainty—

Is this the human condition?

I’m not sure hearts are supposed to be this full.

Would you put my cup down?

Unclench my jaw & laugh with me

In the middle of the street

One cinematic street light

Unfamiliar nausea

You turned thirty and we celebrated in a

Paradise that wasn’t there.

Oh, baby

Why don’t you let me drink your tears?

I’ll walk home from work tonight

We can meet

Halfway between

Blood & water

Call me on your lunch break & maybe eat your words?
